What is AP Studio Art?

Looking at your electives registration form, you will find all of the many wonderful art classes Discovery Arts has to offer! One that might catch your eye that you might not be aware of is AP Studio Art. What is it? What do you do? Is there an exam?

Let's get the facts straight.

1. AP Studio Art is a college level art class. Over the course of the year you will create a portfolio of 24-29 collegiate level art pieces demonstrating high levels of growth, craftsmanship, creativity, and a wide range of skills.

2. AP Studio Art is not an "easy A". This class is a lot of work. The key to success in this class is time management. If you can't complete a lot of art in a short amount of time, this is not for you.

3. No, there is not a traditional exam. The 'exam' for AP Studio Art is a complete portfolio that gets sent to college board and graded on a variety of criteria. If you do not send in a complete portfolio, you do not get credit for the 'exam'.

4. What class will this replace in college? Depending on which portfolio style you choose, a high scoring portfolio can replace a Drawing I or 2D design class for a college art.

OK you convinced me! Now what?

If this class sounds like it's for you, you need to...

1. Talk to Ms. White or Ms. Boyd as soon as possible so we can discuss your work and whether we think you would be a good fit.

2. Attend AP Night on January 24th from 6-8pm

3. Get an AP registration Contract completed and signed by parents and teachers between Jan 18 - Jan 25.

4. Get pumped about making great art!
